Mount Monadnock

Each year on peak foliage weekend, the Outing Club packs onto buses and hikes 3,165 vertical feet to the summit of Mount Monadnock. As the second most hiked mountain in the world, Monadnock is on many bucket lists, and the view during foliage season is definitely worth it. This trip is free to outing club members and is always one of the most packed trips of the year. With all levels of hiker accounted for, there’s always a group to head up the mountain with and if you care to haul a camera up, the photos are legendary.

FAQs

  • The Monadnock hike is a moderate to Intense hike. The route that the outing club takes includes 1477 feet of elevation gain along 2 miles of ascent, as well as 1.8 miles of decent along rocky terrain both ways. We would not recommend this as a first hiking experience, but beginners with some experience will love this trail.

  • Mount Monadnock is 3,165 feet tall, and is over 1000 feet taller than any other mountain within 30 miles in any direction.

  • We find that its best to pack several layers. The hiking is tough and works up a sweat, but its very windy at the top and you’ll be cold if you only wear shorts and a tee. Other than clothes, make sure to pack water and a snack and you’ll be good to go.

  • From Wikipedia “Monadnock is often claimed to be the second-most frequently climbed mountain in the world, after Mount Fuji in Japan. Monadnock is climbed by 125,000 hikers yearly, while Mount Fuji sees 200,000-300,000 hikers yearly”
